Chilton -- SPL -- Mrs. Susye Miles recalls this story about her grandfather, Newton B. Maxey.  She said he had two dogs he prized highly, one of them a puppy.

In those days, there were alligators on the Brazos River.  One day while he was hunting he turned around to find an alligator "charming the puppy,"  Before he could intervene the alligator swallowed the puppy.  It made him so mad he jumped on the 'gator, killed it, and turned it on its back.  He cut it open and rescued the puppy before it died.  He raised it to be a grown dog.
